<p>But in reality, these mainstream <strong>vitamin supplement companies</strong> all purchase their essential ingredients from a core group of wholesale sources that operate behind the scenes and are generally unknown to the public. So while there may be hundreds of vitamin and supplement companies, there is really a relatively small number of primary sources manufacturing the critical nutritional ingredients. In short, most vitamin and supplement companies purchase from the same source. They amount to the same product in different packaging.</p>
<p>This is common in the retail industry. General Motors, the once great American car company, has subdivisions like Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac, and used to have Oldsmobile (not your parents Oldsmobile). Many people who drive Chevys don&#8217;t know that the guy driving the Cadillac next to them is driving a car made by the same company. These private label manufacturing companies often supply the packaging and labeling, as well as manufacture the key ingredients in the vitamin supplements for most of the big names in the vitamin industry like One A Day, Centrum, Flinstones, Vitamin World, The Vitamin Shoppe and GNC.</p>
<p>Private label companies also manufacture vitamins for many smaller companies who vend their products through multi-level networks, smaller retail outlets, the Internet, TV advertorials, magazine ads and other marketing sources. So be careful you don&#8217;t get duped by a product you see in a magazine ad claiming unique, proprietary, age-old, long-lost, newly discovered formulas and secret ingredients based on traditional, thousand years old cultures with special, ancient wisdom.</p>
<p>Chances are, they bought their stuff from the same huge private label manufacturer everyone else does. Or a distributor of one. Same source, different label. Under the hood, a Chevy and a Buick and the now defunct Oldsmobile rode on the same frames with window dressing and plastic fenders added to make them look different. They&#8217;re basically the same car.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;">Private label companies such as Ion Labs, Nutricap Labs, GMP Laboratories, Health Products Corporation, National Vitamin Company and others similar produce and package a large percentage of the popular supplement companies heavily advertised in the mainstream media and retail markets. For example, at least 22 supplement companies that distribute to the MLM industry derive their &#8220;proprietary&#8221; formulas from Vitarich Laboratories. Now that doesn&#8217;t mean that these companies can&#8217;t purchase the same basic ingredients and formulate them in unique and creative ways. Some companies do, but I wouldn&#8217;t bet on most of them. </span></p>
<p>These facts may shock some people, and it does seem a bit deceptive on the surface. And you would think that at least you know the ingredients you&#8217;re buying are manufactured by reputable, competent companies most of which have been around a long time, and their products are of a decent quality and subject to the same quality controls as other mass produced vitamin sources. It&#8217;s important that people know what&#8217;s in and behind the supplements they buy, so you should research thoroughly the companies you purchase from. Its your hard-earned money so know what you&#8217;re getting.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, it seems many of these private label manufacturers are of poor quality. Although published 4 years ago, here&#8217;s what MSNBC reported: <em><span style="color: #ff0000;">&#8220;Of 21 brands of multivitamins on the market in the United States and Canada selected by ConsumerLab.com and tested by independent laboratories, just 10 met the stated claims on their labels or satisfied other quality standards.&#8221; </span></em>Ouch. The article goes on to report,</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;"><em>&#8220;Most worrisome, according to ConsumerLab.com president Dr. Tod Cooperman, is that one product, The Vitamin Shoppe Multivitamins Especially for Women, was contaminated with lead. </em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;"><em>&#8220;</em><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"><em>I was definitely shocked by the amount of lead in [this] woman&#8217;s product,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve never seen that much lead in a multivitamin before.&#8221; </em></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;"><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"><em></em></span><span style="font-size: 13.3333px;"><em>Other products contained more or less of a particular vitamin than listed on the label. And some did not dissolve in the correct amount of time, meaning they could potentially pass through the body without being fully absorbed.&#8221;</em></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;"><em>The Vitamin Shoppe women&#8217;s product contained 15.3 micrograms of lead per daily serving of two tablets.</em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;"><em>This amount of lead is more than 10 times the amount permitted without a warning in California . . . On average, most American adults are exposed to about 3 micrograms of lead through food, wine and other sources, he said, and while 15.3 micrograms of lead per day may not be immediately toxic, the mineral is stored in the body and could build up to dangerous levels with time.</em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;"><em>&#8220;I would be concerned about a woman taking a multivitamin that contains 15.3 micrograms of lead per daily serving,&#8221; said Judy Simon, a dietitian at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. . . </em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;"><em>The same product also contained just 54 percent of the 200 milligrams of calcium stated on the label.</em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;"><em>The analysis also showed that Hero Nutritionals Yummi Bears, a multivitamin for children, had 216 percent of the labeled amount of vitamin A in the retinol form, delivering 5,400 International Units (IU) in a daily serving. That&#8217;s substantially more than the upper tolerable level set by the Institute of Medicine of 2,000 IU for kids ages 1 to 3 and 3,000 IU for those 4 to 8.&#8221;<br />

<p>So another issue is not only vitamin quality but quantity. The popular over the counter vitamin brands like Centrum don&#8217;t have enough ingredients to provide any anti-aging or disease prevention benefits. They merely help prevent severe vitamin deficiency and malnutrition, and that&#8217;s all they were ever designed to do. The public, however, has been mislead to believe that these cheap, usually synthetic vitamins will promote good health. They don&#8217;t, unless as I said, you suffer from severe malnutrition.</p>
<p>Of course this is not true of all companies. Some distinguish themselves and are heavily involved in research and development.</p>
<p>The best vitamin company I have ever seen is NSI, which has an incredible array of products for the one-a-day crowd all the way up to fanatical anti-aging specialists who spend hundreds of dollars a month (and you should if you have the money. Through <strong>caloric restriction</strong>, rats have been shown to live disease free lives that are almost doube their “<strong>natural</strong>” lifespan (however, new evidence suggests that caloric restriction may not be so successful in subjects that are already very lean). </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">Diseases that do occur are significantly delayed when compared to animals who eat all they want. Human studies are currently being conducted. However, if I were you I would not run out and go on a calorie restricted diet, because new evidence shows that by taking the right <strong>antioxidants</strong>, we can replicate the results of a calorie restricted diet, even eating as much fatty food as we want. One such antioxidant is called <strong>resveratrol</strong>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">In other experiments that manipulate the genetic structure of various living organisms, researchers have been able to increase lifespan to a human equivalent of 300 to 500 years!</span></p>

<li>Exercise and movement. It doesn&#8217;t have to be going to the gym and benching 300 lbs. Anything that involves moving, from simple household chores to walks to gardening have shown to keep our bodies healthier, leaner, more flexible and more resistant to aging and disease. Keep moving.</li>

<p>Probably the most important of the 4 is a positive mental attitude. Our thoughts are so powerful that they radiate chemical messages to every cell in our bodies 24 hours a day. Either your body is going to respond to those messages by releasing healthy chemicals or by releasing toxic stress hormones. Which do you prefer?</p>
<p>More evidence is showing the intimate connection between the mind and the body. When the mind is unbalanced and stressed, depressed and fearful, our bodies eventually respond and break down. We become ill, stricken with one disease or another.</p>

<p>When it comes to mental health, perhaps one of the greatest contributors to our modern day understanding comes from a great innovator in the field of psychology, <a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f80000000001bfdbb" title="Abraham Maslow" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Maslow">Abraham Maslow</a>. He gave us the notion of &#8220;<a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f8000000000b51868" title="Self actualization" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self_actualization">self-actualization</a>&#8220;, in which a person becomes the person they were meant to be at their highest capacity &#8211; when a person lives up to their fullest potential. It is fulfilling our talents and dreams, finding our purpose in life and accomplishing it.</p>
<p>As he put it, self-actualization is a process of &#8220;ongoing actualization of potentials, capacities, talents, as fulfillment of a mission  (or call, fate, destiny, or vocation) as a full knowledge of, and acceptance of, the person&#8217;s own intrinsic nature, as an increasing trend toward unity, integration, or synergy within the person.&#8221;</p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Using our talents to the fullest, finding a purpose for living, and becoming whole within, which means connecting with the outside world.</span></strong></span></p>
<p>Maslow was the first great psychologist to study healthy people instead of sick ones. This helped give him his unique insight into an understanding of what it means to be healthy. Most self-actualized people have several things they share in common.</p>
<ul>
<li>A balanced personality has a realistic and accurate perception of reality. Such people have more <span style="text-decoration: underline;">realistic expectations</span> of themselves and others, are more <strong>accepting </strong>and less critical, and have a clear understanding of their limitations and strengths. They are more accepting of their weaknesses and limitations.</li>
<li>Of course, such people still feel negative emotions like everyone: sadness, anxiety, envy, fear, but they can keep things in <span style="text-decoration: underline;">perspective </span>and not become obsessed and stuck in their negative emotions. They pull out of it with their positive thinking.</li>
<li>Most self-actualized people are <strong>spontaneous</strong>, meaning they can do things at the spur of the moment without having to have everything planned out beforehand. This spontaneity is a sign that they are mentally flexible and adaptable, not rigid and stuck in certain, possibly unhealthy, patterns. They can go with the flow.</li>
<li>The healthiest people take the center of attention off themselves and put in on a cause or mission or <span style="text-decoration: underline;">purpose larger than and outside of themselves</span>. Perhaps they are involved in politics, or saving the environment, or volunteering at the local church or hospital. Whatever it may be, they don&#8217;t obsess about their problems. The look to help solve the problems of others.</li>
<li>Self-actualized people tend to be quite <span style="text-decoration: underline;">independent</span>, detached from the unimportant little things most people get upset about, and value their <span style="text-decoration: underline;">privacy and solitude</span>. They are comfortable with themselves and don&#8217;t always need the approval of others to be productive or feel good about themselves.</li>
<li>Healthy people have a rich capacity to <span style="text-decoration: underline;">enjoy the simple things in life</span>. Good food, a walk in nature, music or sex. They are not inhibited by feelings of guilt or shame. They accept their nature and feel good about pleasing themselves. Even the simplest things in life give them a feeling of wonder and awe. They appreciate life and are grateful for what they have.</li>
<li>Self-actualized people have usually had some kind of mystical or life-altering experience that has awakened them <strong>spiritually</strong>. Often it is a tragedy or loss of a loved one, which forces them to discover who they really are, what they really value, and see that there is more to life than what they usually experience on a mundane level. They see life as an awe-inspiring mystery and miracle.</li>
<li>The ability to get outside of ourselves, our own egos, and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">care about others</span> is critical to a healthy lifestyle. The capacity to love, feel <strong>compassion </strong>and empathy for others, makes us feel better about ourselves. Helping a homeless person. Stopping to give someone directions. Healthy relationships fill the heart and soul.</li>
<li>Healthy people have a <strong>voice </strong>and are not afraid to use it. If they see something they don&#8217;t like, they will say so. They are not passive victims of life but choose their path, make responsible decisions for their own care and boundaries.</li>
<li>They tend to have fewer but very intimate friendships, rather than 100 &#8220;acquaintances.&#8221; This shows they have the <span style="text-decoration: underline;">capacity for genuine relationship</span> &#8211; not just superficial connections.</li>
<li>Healthy people tend to be <strong>humble</strong>, not arrogant. The are &#8220;democratic&#8221; in that they see and treat others as equals, with a sense of fairness and integrity. They are not condescending to others, nor do they feel superior to them. They find something to appreciate and learn from in everyone.</li>
<li>Healthy people have a strong ethical and moral sense, but not necessarily conventional. They have strong principles, but they reach those principles by thinking for themselves and arriving at their own conclusions. They don&#8217;t blindly follow others, but have a sense of confidence in their own intuition and wisdom.</li>
<li>Healthy people have a healthy sense of humor. That means they don&#8217;t laugh &#8220;at&#8221; people so much as &#8220;with&#8221; them, and can definitely laugh at themselves. They don&#8217;t take themselves too seriously, and go through life with a light-hearted, joyful attitude. They like to laugh and laugh often. Laughter has been shown to release healthy chemicals in the body, and is now used in the therapy and treatment of many diseases.</li>
<li>Self-actualization means learning to be creative. Creativity is the essence of life, and the more we can create the deeper the well from which we can drink. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">The act of creation, music, painting, being yourself, etc,  is healing to the soul and makes us feel genuinely useful to others and society</span>. A strong, wild imagination adds passion and zest to your life. Read books.</li>
</ul>
<p>We don&#8217;t become self-actualized in one day or week or year. It takes a lifetime. But as our lives unfold they can become beautiful. But we need to make wise decisions, live a healthy lifestyle with integrity and morality, and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">take action</span> to attract the things into our lives that will make them more fulfilling and whole. Start writing that novel you&#8217;ve always wanted to write. Start a web business. Go back to school for a degree you&#8217;ve always dreamed about. Get some counselling for addictions. Do, do but do.</p>

<p>In fact, doctors, the so called medical &#8220;experts&#8221;, get virtually no training at all in nutrition. Have you ever wondered how it is possible that the people most responsible for guarding our health know virtually nothing about how to achieve optimal health naturally? The mainstream medical establishment is bought and paid for by pharmaceutical companies that earn hundreds of billions of dollars in profits by creating unnatural, synthetic &#8220;drugs&#8221; that do far more harm to people&#8217;s health than good. Far more harm.</p>
<p>Pharmaceutical drugs, which most people rely on to keep them &#8220;healthy&#8221;, do nothing to address the underlying causes of disease. They don&#8217;t heal anything, but superficially mask symptoms. They maintain people in a semi-sick state, controlling the disease just enough to keep the profits rolling in. How many of you know old people who are addicted to 10 or 15 different prescription drugs to &#8220;control&#8221; their diseases? Do you really think that is the best way to bring those people back to a state of health? Most pharmaceutical drugs are toxic poisons that turn people into dependent <a class="zem_slink" title="Drug addiction" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_addiction">drug addicts</a>. Pharmaceutical companies are the world&#8217;s most heinous drug pushers, and receive the full support of the US government. Just say no to drugs? Who is kidding who? Who is saying no to the 2 trillion dollar a year <a class="zem_slink" title="Health care" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care">health care</a> establishment? Fortunately, as more peope begin to wake up to the horrors of this shameful industry, more and more people are just saying no.</p>
<p>The most powerful health organization in the world today is the <a class="zem_slink" title="U.S. Food and Drug Administration" rel="homepage" href="http://www.fda.gov/">Food and Drug administration</a> (<a class="zem_slink" title="U.S. Food and Drug Administration" rel="homepage" href="http://www.fda.gov/">FDA</a>). Although it was originally created to safeguard the public from toxic substances being put into our food and drugs and root out corruption, it has itself become corrupt to the core, aiding and abetting the crimes of &#8211; along with the oil companies who have destroyed the health of the planet &#8211; the world&#8217;s most powerful corporations.</p>
<p>In 1992, the <a class="zem_slink" title="Prescription Drug User Fee Act" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prescription_Drug_User_Fee_Act">Prescription Drug User Fee Act</a> (<a class="zem_slink" title="Prescription Drug User Fee Act" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prescription_Drug_User_Fee_Act">PDUFA</a>) allowed the FDA to charge pharmaceutical companies to evaluate drugs for approval. This was a recipe for disaster, and what was intended as &#8220;user fees&#8221; turned into bribes. Then the FDA allowed the drug makers to advertise directly to doctors and consumers, as if the best drug for patients was the one with the most effective marketing campaign behind it. Drugs &#8211; in whose hands life and death were held &#8211; were reduced to everyday commodities like detergent or toothpaste. The doctors were well compensated for going along with the charade, and the advertising was virtually unregulated. Want to  sell more heart <a class="zem_slink" title="Pharmaceutical drug" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharmaceutical_drug">medication</a>? Lie about how effective it is, and hide the horrific side-effects. What people don&#8217;t know can&#8217;t hurt them, right? The medical establishment has allowed itself to be bought off by the <a class="zem_slink" title="Pharmaceutical industry" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharmaceutical_industry">pharmaceutical industry</a>.</p>
<p>A study of the pharmaceutical industry&#8217;s marketing literature targeting doctors to promote and prescribe drugs found that only about 5% was accurate. Just as in the financial industry investments were touted without merit, destroying the life-savings of millions, drugs were being accepted by the FDA, marketed to doctors and <a class="zem_slink" title="Prescription drug" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prescription_drug">prescribed</a> to patients to be poisoned and killed. All this was done knowingly, for profit.</p>
<p>The FDA does the same thing with food as with drugs, knowingly allowing manufacturers to process them with deadly chemicals in to enhance profits; chemicals to make food look fresh when it isn&#8217;t; chemicals to artificially prolong shelf-life; chemicals to manipulate flavor and foster addiction. It&#8217;s one thing to cheat someone out of money, but to maim and kill people for the sake of profit is obscene beyond words.</p>

<p>Vitamin K has two main forms &#8211; phylloquinine(vitamin K1), which is also known as phytonadione &#8211; and menaquinones(vitamin K2). K is further sub-divided into 1) produced by plants and 2)produced by bacteria. In humans it is naturally occurring in the <a class="zem_slink" title="Gastrointestinal tract" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gastrointestinal_tract">digestive tract</a> where bacteria produces it in the colon.</p>
<p>Vitamin K plays a major role in bone health, by empowering secondary modification of the protein osteocalcin required to bind calcium to bone matrix. Thus it helps regulate the body&#8217;s calcium and also aids calcium absorption. Improper levels of calcium can damage the brain if accumulated and vitamin K helps prevent this buildup. It also produces GLA, a &#8220;glue&#8221; like amino acid that helps keep calcium in the bones. <p>So be careful when you read the junk studies and media propoganda by interest groups such as pharmaceutical companies and the mainstream medical establishment, both of which have a vested interest in keeping you as unhealthy as possible, as they try and convince you that vitamins are useless or even harmful to your health. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Free radicals are formed primarily in the body during normal metabolism and also upon exposure to environmental factors, such as cigarette smoke or pollutants. Fats, which are an integral part of all cell membranes, are vulnerable to destruction through oxidation by free radicals. The fat-soluble vitamin, alpha-tocopherol, is uniquely suited to intercept free radicals and thus prevent a chain reaction of lipid destruction. Aside from maintaining the integrity of cell membranes throughout the body, alpha-tocopherol also protects the fats in low density lipoproteins (LDLs) from oxidation . . . Oxidized LDLs have been implicated in the development of cardiovascular diseases (See Disease Prevention). When a molecule of alpha-tocopherol neutralizes a free radical, it is altered in such a way that its antioxidant capacity is lost. However, other antioxidants, such as vitamin C, are capable of regenerating the antioxidant capacity of alpha-tocopherol (2, 3). . . Several other functions of alpha-tocopherol have been identified that are not likely related to its antioxidant capacity. <p>For example, the government website quoted earlier from the National Institute of Health concludes this about vitamin E and cancer as of this writing: &#8220;The inconsistent and limited evidence precludes any recommendations about using vitamin E supplements to prevent cancer.&#8221;</p>
<p>Whoa, wait a minute! How can the government say vitamin E cannot be recommended to help fight cancer when studies are coming out showing massive health benefits when supplementing with the proper form? It has been well established that the government often tries to protect the profits of the pharmaceutical industry  &#8211; even at the expense of your health &#8211; and does not want people to take too many vitamins and become too healthy. If the FDA had its way it would ban vitamin use altogether, and has in fact tried to regulate it in the past. The FDA also is trying to regulate and control the use of safe and healthy hormones like DHEA.</p>
<p>The studies referred to above are a part of an exploding mountain of evidence supporting the powerful disease-fighting and anti-aging properties of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Higher levels of vitamin E in other studies have also been correlated with better health, memory and cognitive function in the elderly, and improved cardio-vascular, cholesteral, and eye health, protecting the skin from ultraviolet radiation, in addition to benefits for diseases such as diabetes.</p>
<p>The American diet leaves most people with unsufficient levels of vitamin E as it is not easily found in abundant quantities in the most commonly consumed foods. For example, commercial food processing removes 50%-90% of vitamin E from wheat.  Sorry, but fries, doritos, beer and twinkies just don&#8217;t contain a lot of vitamin E.</p>
<p>Foods naturally high in vitamin E include, avocados, green leafy vegetables such as spinach, broccoli and asparagus, nuts such as almonds and hazelnuts, seeds, olives, beans, wholegrain foods, milk, eggs, kiwi, mango and wheat germ. Many vegetable oils such as canola, corn, cottonseed, red palm, sunflower, rice and soybean also contain high levels of vitamin E.

<p>PS. It is important to know that some studies have suggested that supplementing with vitamin E actually increases certain types of cancer. This is possible because <strong>vitamins are not meant to be taken alone, in isolation from other supplements</strong>. And it is vitally important to take natural forms of vitamins, not the synthetic forms that biased researchers love to use to skew their results.</p>
<p>Vitamin E, like most vitamins, should always be taken with a wide variety of other supplements, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to balance their effect and allow them to work synergistically, the way nature intended. Taken properly,there is no way that vitamin E will increase cancer risk. No way.</p>
