Whey Protein for Health & Fitness Nutrition

Whey Protein

Whey is a great source of protein and has a high biological value (BV).

Image via Wikipedia

A high BV means that the amino acid ratio in the formula is bioavailable and excellent for building muscle and that a large percentage of the protein consumed is in a form readily absorbed and utilized by the body. In addition, numerous studies from reputable scientific journals have shown that whey protein and colostrum have immune-system enhancing benefits as well.

Whey is a dairy protein that is a by-product of the cheese making process. Before it is processed, whey contains large amounts of fat and lactose (milk sugar), not exactly what you want to ingest to build lean muscle mass. That’s why it is filtered and processed: to remove most of the lactose and fat. If you’ve ever heard of microfiltration or “ion exchange,” you’ll know they are methods of separating the fat and lactose from the protein in order to purify it for fitness purposes.

The end result is a more concentrated protein for sports performance and muscle-building – either concentrate or isolate. Whey protein isolate and whey protein powder concentrate are two alternatives on the [...]

waste every day. This accounts for about 1/4 of all the body’s detoxification needs. Skin requires 1/3 of all your blood to function properly. Your skin is so important that it is sometimes referred to as the “third kidney.” Because skin is so important to the natural detoxification of the body, keeping it healthy is good for your liver and kidneys, which have less of the burden of cleansing your blood of toxic substances that assault us every day due to pollution, stress, etc.

Helping Others Help Us

When someone is sad, depressed, feeling anxious or insecure about themselves and in pain, what can you do to help them?

Often it seems that when you try and say something encouraging to someone who is really down, it has no effect. You could become the target of misdirected anger or disappoint. Maybe they feel shame or embarrassment and shut down or turn away from you – change the subject.

It is difficult for some people to accept or hear positive things about themselves because they don’t believe in themselves to begin with. What we know to be true in our mind we sometimes cannot embrace with our hearts.

At difficult times like these it is important to stay positive and encouraging, and to perservere. This eventually lets the person know that you are not just trying to flatter them, but genuinely care about how they feel. When you really care, your heart will be felt in the weight and tone of your words.

Positive, encouraging feedback from others: family, friends, a community, is necessary for us all to feel whole. It helps us realize that we are human like everyone else, that other people are hurting too, and that [...]

Alpha-lipoic acid is considered one of the most powerful antioxidants manufactured by the human body. It has been called the “universal” antioxidant because it boosts glutathione levels in cells, and is both water and fat soluable. Alpha-lipoic acid is found in every cell of the body, a cofactor in several multi-enzyme complexes where it helps turn glucose into energy.

Alpha-lipoic acid is an essential co-factor in energy metabolism in organisms from microbes to humans. A nutritional coenzyme that participates in the energy metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, with a particular role in blood glucose disposal,  alpha-lipoic acid is necessary for the mitochondrial energy production of the cell, which keeps us alive; it can also help reduce the aging process which reduces wrinkles in the skin and inhibits the disease process.

The therapeutic potential of alpha-lipoic acid is just beginning to be explored, but holds great promise. Alpha-lipoic acid can be found in foods such as organ meats, spinach, broccoli, peas, brussel sprouts, and rice bran. The richest natural food source of alpha-lipoic acid is red meat; other sources include, spinach, broccoli, potatoes, yeast (particularly brewer’s yeast), and certain organ meats (such as [...]

Good Health: Basic Principles

Image via Wikipedia

Health is a concept that is not easily defined. The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of desease or infirmity.”

They are saying that health is a lot more than just the absence of disease. It is much more than that. But good health usually comes down to personal responsibility: choosing to live a healthy lifestyle or an unhealthy one. It is our choice.

It doesn’t help that the media and food industry are loaded with messages encouraging poor health. Most of the food manufactured and produced in the US, for example, is junk filled with disease causing chemicals and stripped of almost all nutrition. And we wonder why there is a cancer epidemic in the US?

There are 4 main steps to a healthy lifestyle.

A healthy, optimistic attitude filled with gratitude, forgiveness, love and nourishing, supportive relationships. A healthy diet, of mostly raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, whole grains and legumes. Adequate supplementation to add what we cannot get from our normal diets. This includes fruit extracts such as resveratrol and hormones such as melatonin and dhea. Exercise and movement. It [...]
